Ten – year old Elena, a wannabe fashion designer, has been separated from her mother for the past five years in Guadalajara, living with her grandmother — and decides to unite her family in the US. The only thing standing in her way is the 2000 mile bus trip across Mexico, robbers with machetes, trigger happy Federales; her mother’s visa approval hanging in the balance of a cunning immigration officer. Her dream for a better life involves a furry white puppy, her t-shirt designs, a grandmother diagnosed with heart disease, a 13 year old boy desperate to return to the US after his parents die —- and a baby goat.
