By Bill Weiss
“Never Again”, a true account and never-before-told insight into the 1992 Los Angeles riots, was just chosen (November 2016) as a double winner in the 2016 Beverly Hills Book Awards for best book (True Crime) and best book cover design (Non-Fiction).
The story, authored by Bill C. Weiss, focuses on the hours leading up to, during, and after the Los Angeles riots erupted on April 29, 1992. It also deals with the emergent preparations and tough decisions a watch commander for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department faced while preparing Lennox Sheriff’s Station in South Los Angeles to intervene, as the Los Angeles Police Department is thrust into the limelight and finding it is totally unprepared to deal with this deadly and dynamic crisis.
Detail by detail, the story illustrates how close the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was to potentially changing the course of history as the watch commander copes with his internal instinct to take action, waged against his self-discipline to follow orders. It leads up to the moment he is ready to put his daring plan into action.
To this day, the recollection of these events produces internal guilt. Something lost still lingers within him as the watch commander struggles to come to terms with what could have been.
As several recent incidents in Ferguson, Missouri (2014), Baltimore, Maryland (2015), and numerous incidents in 2016 have shown, how law enforcement responds to and handles violent encounters and civil disturbances continues to resonate with the entire nation.
The book is also an excellent read for young adult and teenage readers as it was written to educate and connect with those who are too young to have experienced the 1992 Los Angeles riots. A historical reference section in the book contains significant events and incidents before, during, and after this time period. The story connects with many of the current events that we face today.
